Gigantic /// The Grand Paris Express is adding a new circuit of metro line right around the French capital. Working in a consortium with French and Italian partners, Implenia is building three of the sections. The tunnel-boring machine known as “Steffie” is being used for one of them and is the first TBM to be put in place out of the 21 being used for this giant project.

Fixed /// The City of Cologne’s Office for Bridges, Tunnels and City Rail awards Implenia the contract to totally repair and refurbish the Mülheimer Bridge in the north of the city. The contract is worth EUR 137 million (approximately CHF 160 million).

Freezing /// Drilling begins on the central shaft for the new Museuminsel U-Bahn station, part of the project to complete line 5 of the Berlin metro system. This section lies below the Spree Canal, so the first job is to freeze the earth in order to block any water coming into the station while the pilot shafts are expanded.

Commissioned /// Implenia wins an infrastructure contract in Sweden. The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) asks the Group to plan the twin-track extension of the railway between Varberg and Hamra on the country’s west coast. Trafikverket is investing a total of around SEK 3,700 million (CHF 402 million) in the project.

Expanded /// Working in a consortium, Implenia is building two turnkey extensions for the Biology Faculty of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz – part of the university’s new Life Science Campus. The first building opens on the day the foundation stone is laid for the second, which is then scheduled for completion in summer 2020.

Passed /// Around 30 Implenia apprentices from ten different trades take a trip on Lake Zug to celebrate the completion of their courses. Most of them will continue their careers within the Group.

Digitalised /// The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) asks a consortium under Implenia’s technical leadership to build the shell of a housing structure for the A1 motorway in Schwamendingen, Zurich. The consortium is using Building Information Modelling (BIM) in both the submission and execution phase – the first time this has been done in the Swiss infrastructure construction sector. The job is worth around CHF 200 million.

Implenia is lead manager on the contract, which is worth EUR 138 million (CHF 155 million). The job includes a 2.4 km tunnel, a new metro station and a starting shaft.

Halfway there /// Gordon Homuth and Marco Bruns complete the 1,911th tubbing ring in the northern shaft of the Albvorland Tunnel, marking the halfway point in the tunnel boring machines’ journey. The halfway point for the southern shaft is reached four days later.

Finished /// Handover of the grounds and landscaping marks completion of the “sue&til” project in Winterthur. As total contractor, Implenia has developed and built the biggest wooden construction project in Switzerland. It has produced 20 separate buildings in accordance with the Minergie standard, creating a total of 300 owner-occupied and rental apartments.

Leading /// Sustainalytics, the world's leading provider of research and ratings for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, raises Implenia’s rating to 77 points. This puts the Group at the top of the construction industry and validates the terms of the syndicated loan that was increased in the spring.

Linked /// Implenia, in a joint venture with Hochtief, wins the contract to build the 14 km Anneberg-Skanstull Tunnel in Stockholm. Part of the City Link project to improve electricity supplies in the greater Stockholm area, the tunnel is being drilled out by a tunnel boring machine 50 to 100 m beneath the Swedish capital. The total contract is worth around EUR 90 million.
